The latest twist in the global style narrative involves an item found not on the high street, but often in the back of an Indian grandfather’s closet. The humble Indian kachha—the striped cotton shorts traditionally worn as an undergarment—has suddenly become the subject of a viral fashion debate this week.

These simple, striped cotton shorts are now a globally recognized fashion statement. Appearing prominently in "influencer airport looks" following a viral social media video that showed men and women confidently styling the shorts as fashionable streetwear.

International brands are capitalizing on this unexpected moment, marketing the traditional item as a high-fashion piece. The trend is being framed as a form of "heritage minimalism"—lauded for being lightweight, breathable, and reflective of Indian timeless practicality and authenticity.

The price shock

The same item that historically cost a modest ₹50–₹100 in local markets is now retailing globally for between ₹1,500 and ₹11,000, depending on the specific label.

This vast price gulf has sparked simultaneous nostalgia and amusement among Indian netizens, but also generated sharp criticism regarding the commodification and perceived price-gouging of Indian heritage.
